"Queen of the City" Large Notecards (2Packages)
One of the most famous portraits of Queen Charlotte of England (after whom Charlotte, NC was named) was completed when shortly after she married King George III at the age of 17. The artist, Sir Alan Ramsay, was noted for his realistic style and this image is consistent with that of a woman who was reputed to have African ancestry. In the portrait, Charlotte appears somewhat tentative, which is not surprising as she was just beginning to adjust to her role as Queen. I was struck by the fact that she is gesturing towards her crown, but not wearing it. I was inspired to reimagine Charlotte as a younger version of the powerful Queen that she later became. In this piece, I chose to present her as a confident mixed-race young woman who has claimed her crown and is ready to take on the world.
